Two days later Juliana again sat down to eat in a restaurant. This time she was alone with Travis.

“So how did the meeting with David go today?” Juliana speared one of the pan-fried oysters on her plate and chewed with enthusiasm. The Treasure House always did this dish particularly well, she thought. When there was no immediate response from the other side of the table, her brows came together in a firm line. “Not good?”

“Let’s just say that Kirkwood is not a happy camper at the moment.” Travis ate his swordfish in a methodical fashion that did not indicate great enjoyment.

“You know, Travis, you’ve been in a rather difficult mood for the past couple of days,” Juliana pointed out.

“I’m working eighteen hours a day trying to save that bloody resort, get my new office up and running, keep a lot of important clients happy and find some time to spend with you. What kind of mood do you expect me to be in?”

“Maybe going out to dinner tonight wasn’t such a hot idea.”

‘It wasn’t. I’ve got a pile of papers back at the office I should be going through even as we speak.

But since eating out was my idea, I suppose I ought to keep my mouth shut.”

“So how did the meeting with David go?”

“Like I said, he’s not happy. I pointed out one possible way out of the mess and he didn’t like it.”

“What was that?”

“Find a buyer for Flame Valley. Maybe one of the big hotel chains. An outfit that will agree to pay off the resort’s creditors and agree to let Kirkwood stay on as manager.”

Juliana winced. “I can see why he didn’t jump at that. The last thing he wants to do is sell the place.

The whole point is to hang on to it.” She paused, thinking of what her Uncle Roy had said at lunch two days earlier. “It’s a family thing.”

“He reminded me of that. Juliana, I have to tell you, there’s a chance, a very real chance, that I won’t be able to pull this off.”

“You’ll do it.” She smiled at him with all the confidence she felt.

“Damn it, I wish you weren’t so irrationally sure I can save the resort.” Travis’s impatience blazed in his eyes. “Oh, hell. Look, I don’t really want to talk about Flame Valley tonight.”

“All right. Want to talk about Charisma instead?” Juliana helped herself to the last oyster on her plate.

“I’ve been thinking about adding a new line of mugs with the store logo on them. Subliminal advertising, you see. Every time a customer uses one of them at home, he’d think of Charisma.”

“It’s probably not a bad idea but right now I don’t want to talk about it or anything else to do with Charisma.”

“Well, what do you want to talk about?” she asked patiently as she forked up the remainder of her anchovy and garlic spiked salad.

“Us.”

“Us?” She paused in midchew and eyed him intently. He definitely was in a strange mood tonight.

“What about us?”

She watched Travis glance around the casually chic dining room.
